Maryland Women Defeat #8 Ohio State
The #14 ranked University of Maryland (UMD) Women basketball team defeated #8 Ohio State University (OSU) 99-69 in Big Ten play in College Park, Monday, January 22. The Lady Terps took control early in the first quarter led by the hot shooting hand of their Junior forward, Eleanna Christinaki. OSU took contended shots from outside during the first quarter and never found their rythmn until late in that same quarter. As the Terps cooled the Buckeyes pulled within 8 points to finish the first trailing 27-19. That is the closest OSU would be all night as the Terps found growing success on the defensive, as well as, the offensive ends of the court. By halftime the Terps had a 15 point lead 50 -35.
Seven Terp players had floor minutes greater than 20 while leaning on the first half performance of Christinaki and Kalia Charles explosive second half. Christinaki and Charles finished with 26 and 32 points, respectively. Key to the Terps offensive performance was Channise Lewis who played 37 stellar scoreless minutes while leading the team with 10 assists and five rebounds. For the night the Terps shot 55% from the floor going 61% from the 3 point line and 67% from the free throw line.
Ohio State leading scoring combination of Stephanie Mavunga and Kelsey Mitchell was held under their season averages with 10 and 15 points, respectively for the evening. Poor shot selection and the lack of responding to the Terps first half push put the Buckeye’s in trouble all evening. OSU finished the night shooting a dismal 39% from the floor and 6 for 22 from the 3-point line.
The Terps record is now 17-3 (6-1, B1G Ten) and they will not see OSU again during the remainder of the season. OSU, for their part, will file this game away and look forward to a potential rematch with Maryland in New York City during the B1G Ten Tournament.
