Maryland First Lady on Bullying

November 28, 2012
Dear Friend,

Last night I had the opportunity to host a discussion with experts on what we’re doing in Maryland to combat bullying and how everyone can help. We talked about a lot of issues that affect our schools and communities and I wanted to make sure to send you the video:

In Maryland, we’ve worked hard to pass a number of meaningful anti-bullying laws, one of which was called, “one of the most aggressive anti-bullying laws in the country.” These laws ensure that our public schools have a policy in place that prohibits bullying, harassment and intimidation.

But even with strong policies, there are still too many incidents of bullying that go unreported each year. That’s why we’ve taken a hands-on approach in Maryland — and speaking up is a big part of the solution.

We need parents to talk to their kids, teachers to reach out to students and our children to go the extra mile to help peers being bullied.

We need every Marylander to stand up and speak out against bullying because it will take all of us to end the abuse.

Thanks,
Katie O’Malley
