March Madness in Rockville (Video)

Kids in grades five through nine can show off their skills with the Rockville City Police at the eighth annual March Madness Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 22 at the Twinbrook Community Recreation Center gym, 12920 Twinbrook Parkway.

Kelley Day Terry, director of the Twinbrook community center, said the event breaks down barriers that might exist between youth and the Police Department.

“The kids see the officers in a different light, and they joke around,” Day Terry said. “It also opens up a line of communication so the next time they see them they can talk to them, and it’s great.”

Tournament check-in begins at 6:30 p.m. and games begin at 7 p.m. The Twinbrook Elementary School PTA will sell refreshments throughout the games. The night will also feature prizes, a DJ and trophies to be awarded to the winning teams.

The tournament is open to teams of three students in grades five through nine. Team members must register individually and provide a team name. Individual youths may also register and will be placed on a team. The cost is $5 for city residents and $6 for non-residents.
