M.A.K.U. Soundsystem at Strathmore (Video)
Summer Concerts at Strathmore continue on July 3 with traditional Colombian music by M.A.K.U Soundsystem at the Gudelsky Concert Pavilion Gazebo, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda. The concert begins at 7 p.m. The venue is located across the street from the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station. Parking is $5 in the Metro garage. Accessible parking is available on-site on a space available basis. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or low beach chairs.
Traditional Colombian music with a futuristic spin—a harmonic convergence of Colombian maracas, gaitas (large indigenous flute) and big drums with guitar, bass, synthesizer and horn section—that’s M.A.K.U Soundsystem. Their name comes from a fascinating chapter in Colombia’s history, but their sound is unabashedly futuristic, a mash-up of Columbia folk music with jazz, psychedelic rock, punk, afro-beat, reggae and soul.
Food is available at the BBQ Shack if you want to enjoy a picnic dinner. BBQ ribs, pulled pork, veggie burgers, hot dogs, side dishes, desserts, soda, water and beer and wine are available for purchase starting at 5:30 p.m.
Be on the lookout before the performance for roving performers from Happenstance Theater – Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell.
