Longtime Council Adviser Announces Resignation

Longtime Council Administrator Steve Farber announced his resignation Tuesday.

Farber, 75, of Chevy Chase, said he planned on returning to a national advisory service on fiscal and intergovernmental affairs — an organization he formed in 1983.

“It’s funny. I’m fortunate I have all my energy and enthusiasm as I had on day one. I think I have all my marbles, but I’m less sure of that,” Farber joked Tuesday morning.

Farber joined the council staff 26 years ago. Since then, he has served seven councils.

A graduate of Harvard and the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, Farber serves as the principal adviser to the council and oversees the council staff.

“The reason I’m comfortable leaving is I’ve put in place a marvelous group of people, marvelously dedicated,” Farber said. “They’ll serve the council for many years to come.”

Farber plans to leave in February 2018.

In a statement released Tuesday morning, Council President Roger Berliner said:

“For the past 26 years, Steve Farber has served the council and the community with the highest distinction. He has played a pivotal role in strengthening the County’s fiscal and governmental performance in multiple ways.  He has led our superb staff with great skill and care.

“All of us have benefited from the quality and integrity of Steve’s work and from the institutional knowledge, commitment and good humor he brings to it. Like the six Councils before us, we deeply respect and appreciate his service. We wish Steve all the best in his future work.”

“He’s a tremendous loss to Montgomery County,” Councilmember Sidney Katz said.

Farber’s salary makes him one of the most highly paid people on the county payroll. According to the data Montgomery website, his salary exceeds $233,000.
