Katz Family Honored for Generational Influence in Gaithersburg

The clock tower dedicated to the Katz family in History Park, Old Towne Gaithersburg.

Council Vice President Sidney Katz joined the City of Gaithersburg in dedicating a clock tower to his parents on July 29.

Katz’s parents, Jacob and Rose Wolfson, opened Wolfson’s Department Store on Diamond Avenue in 1918. The store remained open for 95 years and was recognized as a staple of Old Towne Gaithersburg. The store was known as a gathering place for residents and helped create a hometown atmosphere in the area.

“My family and I are grateful to the City of Gaithersburg to have this remembrance of my parents,” said Katz. “My mother lived her entire life in the City (as did I) and my parents would be pleased to know that the City they loved honored them in this way.”

The council member attended the ceremony with his two brothers, Allen and Terry Katz, and their families. The clock is in the sitting area of History Park in Old Towne Gaithersburg.
