January Recreation Events Not to be Missed

Since 1954, the Department of Recreation (MCR) has remained dedicated to providing inclusive quality recreation programs and activities that serve the recreation and leisure needs of the Montgomery County community. The Department manages 34 facilities including community and neighborhood recreation centers, senior centers, and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and provides thousands of programs such as out-of-school activities, aquatics, classes, youth and adult sports programs and leagues, senior programs, and therapeutic recreation that enhance the quality of life for participants of all ages, cultures, and abilities. The Department of Recreation is nationally recognized for its excellence in the provision of facilities and programs.

January 9: 2015 RecZone County Cup at Long Branch Community Recreation Center

January 10:  Kaleidoscope Art at Plum GarCommunity Recreation Center

January 13:  Adult Swim at Martin Luther King Swim Center

January 13:  Wind Talker Concert at Plum Gar Community Recreation Center
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. For Active 55+. Come along on a breathtaking multimedia journey to majestic and awe-inspiring landscapes, set to the hauntingly beautiful sound of Native American Flute. Call 240.777.4919 for more information.

January 14:  Beginning Handbuilt Pottery for Adults at Wheaton Community Recreation Center
1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Ages 18 and up with disabilities, $70 for 8 sessions. Register under course #394737.  Same class is offered at White Oak CRC on Thursdays. Call 240.777.6870 for more information.

January 15:  TR Swimming for Adults with Physical Disabilities at Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center
8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Cost is $50 for 8 sessions. Register under course #394806. This is a swimming and aquatic exercise class for people with MS and/or physical disabilities who want to work on their fitness and flexibility in an aquatic environment. Call 240.777.6870 for more information.

January 15:   Dance Fitness at Holiday Park Senior Center
1:00 p.m.-1:55 p.m. Exercise with funky rock music, get limber, balanced, and have fun. Enjoy ten sessions for $48, or $40 W/HPSI. Call 240.777.4999 for more information.

 January 24:  Mix-Match Bash at Holiday Park Senior Center
7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Ages 15 & Up with disabilities. A registration form is required. All dancers pay $8.00 pre-register or $10:00 at the door. Dress in a fun combination of stripes, plaids, bright colors, two different shoes, different socks, or more. Prizes awarded for most creative attire. Call 240.777.6870 for more information.

Friday Night Hypes:  6:30 p.m – 8:30 p.m. $5 per child each night includes meal. Parents and family are welcome to attend; the meal ticket is $3 for parents and families, this program is for grades 2-5. Enjoy movies, games, music, and food, theme nights, and much more.

Club Friday:  Club Friday is filled with fun activities such as: games, sports, movies, DJ, dancing, arts & crafts, theme nights, raffles and special events that every child will enjoy. Come out and join in the fun! Meets October through May. Check specific locations for dates and times. The program is for grades 3-6 and the fee is a one-time payment of $50.

County Seniors Have a Free Ride to Fun, Fellowship, and Activity

It’s easy! It’s free! It’s our curb-to curb shuttle service to the County’s five senior centers for those aged 55 and above. Thanks to our friends at the Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA), seniors are able to become more active and engaged. Check out the video, you’ll love Luicie, who says, “and now I start to do the yoga.” Tell your friends and neighbors about this great program.
