For the 24th year the City of Gaithersburg and The Gazette Newspapers have teamed up to sponsor the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary Arts Contest for Gaithersburg area students.

This year more than 175 young people addressed the theme, “His Words and Ideas in Our Time.” Members of the City’s Multicultural Affairs and Educational Enrichment Committees selected the following winners: Deepak Menon and Samantha Halling, both 4th graders at Strawberry Knoll Elementary School, and Reem Abdo Kahin, a 4th grader at Rosemont Elementary School.

The students will read their essays at the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council meeting on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. The meeting is televised live on Gaithersburg Cable TV, which can be viewed on Comcast and RCN Channel 13 or FiOS Channel 25 within the corporate city limits. Their essays can also be viewed online at www.gaithersburgmd.gov in the related documents section.

Gaithersburg is once again joining with the Montgomery County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Commemorative Committee and Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett to host a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Tribute and Celebration. The celebration features diverse and talented performers and award honorees who serve their communities unselfishly, according to a press release from the city. The event is scheduled to be held at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda on Jan. 19 at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free, tickets are required. Visit www.strathmore.org for details.
