Hoeber To Make Second Run at 6th District Seat
Amie Hoeber, a Potomac Republican, said Tuesday she was running for the 6th Congressional District seat promising to work on the district’s transportation issues as well as addressing the opioid crisis.
Hoeber ran for the seat in 2016, winning the Republican nomination, and then losing to Democrat Rep. John Delaney by a more than 2-to-1 margin.
Her experience two years ago makes her a more credible candidate, she said. Hoeber said she knows the district more than she did from the last election.
And she expects a different result from two years ago as well.
“In the first place it’s an open seat. The lack of an incumbent makes my chances much better,” Hoeber said. Delaney has chosen not to seek a fourth term in Congress. Instead, he’s running for president in 2020.
Hoeber said she would work with the federal government and Gov. Larry Hogan on the district’s transportation issues.
“As a congressman, I’d be eager to cooperate with the governor on that sort of thing,” she said.
Hoeber said she supported Hogan’s plan for I-270, which would add two lanes to the highway paid for through tolls.
“I think that would work,” she said. “It has worked well in Virginia, and I think it would work well here.”
She noted Hogan’s plan doesn’t solve the bottleneck on the American Legion Bridge.
Hoeber said she was following proposals for day centers for recovering drug addicts. She said she thought the abandoned Fort Ritchie in Cascade could be a drug rehab center.
“We have to develop some real controls on doctors who are prescribing those sorts of medicines,” she said.
Hoeber was deputy assistant secretary (R&D) for the U.S. Army. Since 1992, she has run her own company, AMH Consulting, which focuses on defense-related matters.
