Hiker Dead After Becoming Trapped Under Rocks
Montgomery County Police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old hiker that occurred on a trail along the Potomac River on Sunday afternoon. Police said there is no indication of foul play.
At approximately 4:38 p.m., on Aug. 31, fire and rescue personnel and officers from the 2nd District responded to a call for a male hiker, identified by police as Rian Avarham Khalder of Silver Spring, who had been rock climbing along the Potomac River on an island near the Angler Inn boat ramp.
According to police, the preliminary investigation indicates that Khalder and his 14-year-old brother had been hiking when Khalder began climbing on an area of rocks. As he was climbing upward, police said a portion of the rocks gave way and he fell with the rocks, including one large boulder, coming down on him. He apparently died from the injuries suffered from the fall.
On his Twitter account, Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said severe weather in the area impacted a portion of the recovery operation.
Police said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will perform an autopsy.
