Halloween Happenings: Family Fun for All Ages

There are many family-friendly events in the county to celebrate Halloween. Here are a few:

Haloween Eye Spy Trains

Take a ride on the miniature trains in Cabin John and Wheaton Regional Parks through ‘Trainsylvania.” Cabin John Regional Park

Open on weekends now through Oct. 31

Tickets are primarily sold online and there may be some tickets available onsite. The parks are decorated for Halloween and children may enjoy looking for characters along the track. The miniature trains are replicas of the 1863 C.P. Huntington, a 4-2-4T steam locomotive purchased by the Southern Pacific Railroad and named in honor of Collis P. Huntington, President of the Southern Pacific Company.

Witch Wartsmith’s Halloween Spooktacular Puppet Show

The Puppet Co. Playhouse
7300 MacArthur Boulevard, Glen Echo

Bring the family to this spooky variety show where the audience votes for the winner. The show is directed by Liz Dapo, and features the talents of Kristina Hopkins, Kelcie Kosberg, Jackie Madejski, Danny Pushkin, and understudy Liz Dapo. The Mainstage is open at 50% capacity and masks are required.

Halloween Hustle Fun Run and Walk

Montgomery Parks’s second annual Haunted Hustle includes a walk or jog of a 2.7 mile trail loop to collect fun Halloween giveaways along the way.
Black Hill Regional Park
20930 Lake Ridge Drive, Boyds

Come out in costume for this fun run and walk through the Black Hill Regional Park. The 2.7 mile trail loop will have stations along the way to collect fun Halloween giveaways.  Organizers say even though online registration for this event is closed, those who wish to attend may still come and register at the check in table.

Date: Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to noon

Trunk N’ Treat

The Takoma Park Police Department is hosting their first ever Trunk N’ Treat event for all ages.
Anne Street at University Boulevard
Behind the MegaMart where the Crossroads Farmers Market is held

There will be spooky fun, game and raffles for all ages. Wear your costume to show off your Halloween spirit. Masks are required in the even area. MegaMart is sponsoring the event.

Date:  Oct. 29 from 4 – 6 p.m.


Glen Echo Fall Frolic Halloween Fun for Families

The annual event is back this year and features Halloween arts and crafts and a costume parade.

Nightmare on Elm Street Urban Park

Montgomery Parks is hosting this free event for all ages.|
Elm Street Urban Park
4600 Elm Street, Bethesda

All ages may join in for some spooky, silly fun at this event. Purchase food from a pizza and ice cream food truck.  There will also be a Halloween disc jockey, Halloween themed scavenger hunt, lots of lawn games, and plenty of picnic seating. There will be tons of great Halloween props and decorations for you to snap pictures with. Come in costume and join in the costume parade. No registration is required for this free event.

Date: Oct. 30 from 1 – 4 p.m.

Trick-or-Treat at the Museum

Free event for all ages, especially younger children.
Gaithersburg Community Museum
9 South Summit Avenue, Gaithersburg

Visit the museum in costume to receive a Halloween treat and make a craft. This is an indoor activity so visitors are asked to wear a mask, especially if not vaccinated for COVID. Also, visitors are asked to practice social distancing whenever possible.

Date: Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
