Laytonia Recreational Park will open this weekend, filling the absence of recreational parks in the mid-county area, project manager Kimberly Paniati said.

The grand opening will feature a ribbon-cutting, sports games, field day games, a rock climbing wall, food trucks and information tables.

48-acre Laytonia is one of the county’s largest parks, most of which are under 15 acres. It is the first recreational park to open in two years.

Laytonia has three lighted rectangular fields, one lighted full-size baseball field, a half basketball court, a trail network, a playground, 250 parking spaces and a restroom and pavilion. All seats have bleachers and the three rectangular fields have scoreboards.

Local nonprofit Leveling The Playing Field will hold a drive for new and used sports equipment to donate to families in need.

In case of rain the grand opening will be moved to Saturday, June 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Laytonia Recreational Park is located at 7300 Airpark Road in Gaithersburg.
