Goal Minded Teams Prevail (PHOTOS)
Friday at Quince Orchard High School’s Cougar Dome.
In the survive-and-advance environment that is the state playoff system for lacrosse in the Maryland Public Scholastic Sports Athletic Association (MPSSAA) all high schools have a chance to go on a run and advance to the state finals. Hot hands or in this case the hot sticks belonged to the Wootton Girls on Friday night that beat the Quince Orchard Girls 14 to 6. Later on the same field the Quince Orchard boys soundly trashed Magruder by a score of 16-2. The Wootton girls replayed the same upset minded performance they used two weeks earlier to defeat QO by winning the draws, fielding ground balls, double and triple teaming the seemingly weaker unit members on QO to create turnovers and held to a stout defense in goal. The hot stick handed Wootton girls were on target once they penetrated the QO defense for easy scores in the first half and had QO on their heels the entire second half while the Cougar girls never regained their composure.
Should Wootton get by Gaithersburg on Monday, May 11 they will meet the winner of the Whitman/Churchill matchup on Friday, May 13th for a chance at the 4A West Regional Championship.
In the lacrosse nightcap at the Cougar Dome, the Magruder Colonels boys never had a chance. QO scored often with ease in the first 5 minutes with QO’s Xavier Twine winning draws and setting up scoring by the proficient attack men like Jake Christensen and brother Colton along with Tyler Milwit and mid fielders Troy Porter and Nick Ransing. Scoring continued throughout the first half and by the time the teams took a break it was 12-0 for the Cougars. The highlight for the night wasn’t so much the scoring, as it was the performance by QO’s goalie Paul Brott who had 11 saves by my count before he was pulled with about 7 minutes left in the game. Magruder eventually got on the board twice before the final horn to make it 16-2 Quince Orchard. QO will faceoff with Wootton in the Cougar Dome on Monday May 11 and should one or the other advance they will face the winner of Churchill/Whitman on Wednesday May 13. Churchill is the MoCo favorite to advance as 4A West Regional Champs. The 4A West winner then gets the pleasure of meeting the 4A South Regional Champ coming from one of the Baltimore area schools.
