“Glitter Grenade” Prank Shuts Down Rockville Library

Rockville Library was temporarily evacuated Monday after a “glitter grenade” was detonated in the faces of three employees in the Office of Human Rights located within the library at 21 Maryland Ave.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesman Pete Piringer, the glitter was in a letter that was found by employees at about 12:30 p.m. Piringer said when the letter was opened it  “detonated” in the faces of three employees.

“We quarantined them in the room and evacuated most of the library and closed off streets to town center,” Piringer told MyMCMedia.

More than 40 fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene.

“There was other powder in with the glitter. We responded out of an abundance of caution,” Piringer said.

No one was injured in the incident, according to Piringer.
