Girl Scouts Promote Crosswalk Use Along Route 355 in Gaithersburg
The Juniors of Girl Scout Troop 274 teamed up with Gaithersburg Police on June 7th to promote pedestrian safety alongside Route 355 at Summit Avenue.
The troop members are working to complete their Bronze Award project by “promoting crosswalk use.”
“We applaud the Girl Scouts of Troop 274 for their willingness to help us in our efforts,” said Traffic Safety Sergeant Scott Scarff. “Who better than the scouts to remind adults of the importance of following a basic rule parents teach to all children, which is to look both ways and cross at the crosswalk.”
The troop’s project focuses on pedestrians crossing busy Route 355 near St. Martin of Tours Parish, particularly on Sunday mornings. To prepare for this final task, the troop members researched county statistics and spoke with Gaithersburg Police Officers, the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council, community activists, and the St. Martin’s Parish leadership. Their final task included a public service announcement during St. Martin’s Annual Field Mass and Picnic as well as a physical presence along the road, accompanied by members of the Gaithersburg Police Department.
Troop members helped pedestrians safely cross Route 355 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 7 and the girls distributed information about pedestrian safety. They also gave out stickers promoting the Police Department. Despite the presence of police officers and the Girl Scouts, several pedestrians were still spotted crossing the busy roadway outside the crosswalk indicating there is still work to be done.
This pedestrian safety project is in keeping with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration and the Maryland Highway Traffic Safety Office’s “Towards Zero Deaths” initiative to reduce fatalities on highways to zero. On average, police say every year more than 100 pedestrians are killed and more than 2,300 pedestrians are injured in Maryland as a result of collisions with motor vehicles.
The Bronze Award is the highest award that Girl Scouts can earn at the Junior level. It requires them to identify a way to make a positive change in their community and then develop and execute a plan that results in positive change.
