Germantown Commander Tries to Show the Facts Behind Crime Numbers

Capt. Mark Plazinski, commander of the Germantown police district, asked local residents whether they thought crime was increasing.

With a homicide only two days ago, several people nodded their heads.

Plazinski, however, wanted the residents to see that of the six homicides in the district since he took command in April 2017, four were individuals related to drug trafficking and two were domestic related.

“Drugs and domestic violence, that tends to be the Montgomery County homicide,” Plazinski said.

The most recent homicide, he said, still has “investigative steps” but one theory was that the shooting was accidental. The two men were involved in the marijuana trade, and practicing with the gun. It fired killing one man, Plazinski said. The second man committed suicide the next day, according to Montgomery County police.

Crimes against people is up 20 percent, crimes against property is down 5 percent and crimes against society is up 8 percent. Crimes against society include drug offenses, gambling and prostitution.

He described a recent robbery where a boyfriend and girlfriend were arguing, he pushes here and walks away with her cell phone. It meets the definition of a robbery. “Do I think it was traumatic for that girlfriend, yes. Am I worried about him robbing you all? No,” Plazinski said.
