Starting June 5, potential candidates can pick up the candidate packets that had formerly been unavailable until July 6. The Board of Supervisors of Elections decided to make that change on Wednesday.

“We received inquiries from some candidates requesting early release of the packets and the board considered that request,” City Attorney Lynn  Board told MyMCMedia.

The packet contains the petition for candidacy which includes a form requiring the signature of 100 registered city voters to be considered a candidate.

“I would speculate they want to go ahead and start collecting those signatures,” Board said of the reason for the request for early release of the packets.

Also in the candidate packet is a questionnaire for a biographical sketch of the candidate, campaign finance reporting forms, a copy of the city code for election, guidelines for elections; a notice for mandatory candidate training, a copy of the city’s ethics ordinance, a financial disclosure statement among other items.

The Elections Board also selected the Kentlands Clubhouse as the new polling place for the Kentlands precinct.

In past elections, the city used the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Kentlands as a polling place. This year church officials say the facility is unavailable. The elections board selected the Kentlands Clubhouse and Board said the Kentlands Citizens  Assembly waived the fee to use it.

In November, the terms of councilmembers Ryan Spiegel, Cathy Drzyzgula and Neil Harris are set to expire. Also up for election is the mayor’s seat, currently held by Jud Ashman.

For registration information contact the Montgomery County Board of Elections at 240.777.VOTE (8683) or visit www.montgomerycountymd.gov/elections. The last day to file for candidacy is Sept. 18.

Election Day is Nov. 3. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
