Gaithersburg Plans Nov. 16 Reception for Outgoing Councilmember Cathy Drzyzgula
A reception to honor outgoing Gaithersburg City Council Member Cathy Drzyzgula is scheduled in the 2nd Floor Gallery at Gaithersburg City Hall, 31 South Summit Avenue, on November 16 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Drzyzgula’s term of office expired this year and she is not running for reelection.
“I never planned to run for office, but have greatly enjoyed this opportunity to serve our community, ” said Drzyzgula. “I am happy to have met and worked with people from neighborhoods throughout the City. During my terms the City made it through the recession with little reduction in service and we are now adding new residents, businesses and recreational opportunities at a steady pace. We need to encourage and manage redevelopment, which will ensure continued vibrancy in the future. I thank all the City staff members for supporting the Mayor and Council and implementing policy in such an outstanding way. I will be sad to leave next year.”
There is no cost to attend the reception. RSVPs were requested by November 6. To reserve, email Michelle Coupé at mcoupe@gaithersburgmd.gov.
Elected to the City Council in November of 2007 after having spent 10 years on various City committees, Drzyzgula moved forward several projects, including planning for the Route 355 Corridor, revitalization of Olde Towne, environmental initiatives including ensuring the City complies with federal and state stormwater mandates in a way that is fair to all, and championing the redevelopment of Constitution Gardens, which opened as the first municipal nature play space in Maryland in mid-September of 2015.
“We are so fortunate in Gaithersburg to have had Cathy’s service for the last eight years,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman. “She has been an exceptional public servant whose brilliance and dedication are matched only by her remarkable humility. I will miss her greatly.”
Drzyzgula and her husband, Bob, plan to retire in 2016 to the Pacific Northwest.
