Dr. William Leahy, of Chevy Chase, was honored Saturday, Nov. 12 at the 5th Annual Gaithersburg High School Education Foundation gala for his work with Gaithersburg High School (GHS) and Ingleside at King Farm (IKF), a senior living community in Rockville, in his creation of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program and its support of the participating Gaithersburg students.

Through the CNA program, GHS students are given the opportunity to receive health-career education and obtain clinical experience in a community-based setting. The program, now in its second year, is sponsored by Ingleside at King Farm, where Dr. Leahy also serves on their Board of Directors. It was created by Dr. Leahy and is administered and taught by a nursing professor through Montgomery College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education division. Dr. Leahy’s High School Health Education Foundation sponsors the students so they can complete the program tuition-free.

“It’s an honor to give these students the opportunity to explore a career in health care through the Certified Nursing Assistant training program,” said Dr. Leahy. “I look forward to continuing this collaboration with the staff and residents at Ingleside at King Farm.”

The program is a valuable intergenerational experience for students and residents alike. Students receive hands-on experience working and interacting with residents on various nursing skills. The program provides the training and experience necessary for students to pass certifying exams.
