Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber Honors Police, Firefighters (VIDEO & PHOTOS)

The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce awarded firefighters and police officers Friday morning at a ceremony at the Montgomery County Agricultural Center in Gaithersburg.

Montgomery Village District Officer Matthew McGowan received a medal of valor. He was attacked by a man with a knife after the man provided information about a stolen bicycle. Capt. Dinesh Patil noted McGowan handled the situation professionally.

Fire Chief Scott Goldstein awarded a distinguished service citation to Firefighter Rescuer Dwight G. Reid, who assisted a Holy Cross Hospital security guard in an altercation with a patient being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder. His actions protected emergency room personnel and limited harm to the patient.

In the Montgomery Village District, Capt. Dinesh Patil awarded distinguished service citations to:

  • Robert Lumsden, who provided rescue breaths to a 10-day-old baby in September, as well as his actions at the report of a drowning victim at Lake Whetstone.
  • Officer Drew Abbamonte, who in April spotted a man wanted for a sexual assault, chased and arrested him.
  • Al Dzenkowski, Officer Bradley Feldman, Officer Nicholas Hoornstra and Officer Michelle Barger, who saved the life of a man who had lacerated his own neck as well as other cuts throughout his body.
  • Officer Scott Zimmerman, who helped speed up the demolition of an abandoned golf course clubhouse that had become the site of underage drinking, drug use and other criminal activity.

In the Germantown District, Capt. Mark Plazinski awarded a citation for bravery to Sgt. Manuel Saponara, Officer Brian Hollway and Luisa Meade, who in June 2016 who kicked down the door of an apartment where a woman was being assaulted by her son.

Plazinski awarded distinguished service citations to:

  • Officer Brian Holloway, Dawn Wenner and Maurice Key, who helped save the life of a woman shot during a domestic dispute in October 2016.
  • Officer Melissa Kiley and Officer Courtnie Maines, who, while off-duty, saved a man from a heroin overdose in September 2016.
  • Officer Jonathan Pruziner, who found a missing autistic girl in March.

Gaithersburg Police awarded a distinguished service citations to:

  • Officer John Davis, who provided aid to a man who had been severely bitten by a dog in September 2016.
  • Officer Michelle Kirk, who, in January, restrained a pit bull and help a victim who had been severely bitten.
