Gaithersburg Crews Remove 20 Trees to Add 20 Parking Spots in Quince Orchard Park

Gaithersburg city crews have removed 20 trees in the Quince Orchard Park community this month to make room for 20 more parking spaces along Orchard Ridge Drive.

“It’s something the community wanted,” said Ollie Mumpower, chief of Gaithersburg’s Engineering Services Division, noting there’s been a demand for more parking in the residential community.

According to Mumpower, the tree stumps will be ground down later this week and construction of the parking spaces should begin next week. He expects the work to be finished in a couple of weeks. Certainly, he said, by the end of June.

The work includes the removal of portions of the grass strip between the curb and sidewalk. No parking signs are going to be posted at least 48 hours in advance of the construction work. City officials said the signs will be marked with the dates and times of the parking restrictions to keep residents informed of the construction activity timeline.

As for replacing the trees in another area of Quince Orchard Park or the city limits, Mumpower said, that decision has not been made yet.

That’s something to talk to the community about, he said, noting that the nearby median already has a robust tree planting.

You can find out more about the construction of the new parking spaces on the city’s website, here.
