Gaithersburg City Manager Responds to Lakelands Community’s Concerns about Usage at Turf Field
Traffic has increased along Main Street in the Lakelands community but there have been only three reported collisions since January of 2013 on the stretch of road near the synthetic turf field, according to Gaithersburg City Manager Tony Tomasello who also notes that local police are aware of the community’s concerns about traffic safety in that area.
Just last month, Lakelands property manager Gary Simon wrote a letter to Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman asking for help with traffic safety, noise and trash concerns in the area of Lakelands Park.
In a letter dated July 8th, Tomasello responded on behalf of Mayor Ashman.
“We certainly acknowledge it is a busy facility, as it was designed to be,” said Tomasello. “However, neither the mayor nor I were aware of any particular operational issues that could be called urgent.”
According to Tomasello, city field supervisors are present during all permitted activities when the city has field usage. He said that Lakelands Park Middle School is responsible for field supervision during after school hours and for ensuring trash is cleaned up and the gate is locked. After hours, Tomasello said city park observers monitor activities in and around parks.
Additionally, Tomasello said that he and the mayor were available to meet with representatives of the homeowners association to discuss their concerns in person as well.
So far, no word on if a meeting has been scheduled.
