Friday Night Star-Lights Part 2
October high school football games are the tease for what we can expect to come in November as teams stretch to make playoff spots. It does not matter what division or conference a team plays in they all have an eye set on the prize of extending their season or perhaps spoiling another’s.
These October teams, Good Counsel, Northwest and Damascus, continued their tradition of winning and are setting themselves up for playoff appearances but all have challenging games remaining on their schedule. For now let’s take a look back on how well they performed earlier in October.
October 3 – Good Counsel 21 – DeMatha 14
Star-Light: #22 Mohamed Ibrahim, Running Back
Top rated DeMatha went to Olney on this Friday night to face Good Counsel for league supremacy in the Washington Catholic Athletic Association. Pay no attention to that helicopter that deposited Penn State Head Coach Jamie Franklin at the stadium doorstep nor the half dozen Division 1A scouts milling on the sidelines. You needed to stay seated in Dancel Stadium and witness a title fight that would be resolved in the final minute. This game belonged to Good Counsel and an unexpected starter sophomore running back named Mohamed Ibrahim who carried the ball 23 times for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

October 10 – Northwest 49 – Paint Branch 6
Star-Light: #9 Brandon Williams, Northwest Wide Receiver
This game had all the early makings of a college Southeast Conference (SEC) match between two undefeated 4A division leaders. Unfortunately, Paint Branch didn’t show up for the game. Northwest got the upper hand early and never lifted their cleats off the chests of the Panthers. Much can be attributed to senior Northwest playmakers E.J. Lee and Brandon Williams. E.J. didn’t have the kind of night Brandon did with 3 TD’s on short yard pass connections from Junior QB Mark Pierce. Williams, unlike Lee and Pierce, plays both ways and it was on the defensive side of the ball that Williams helped to make the Panthers clawless.

October 16 – Damascus 42 – Rockville 14
Star-Light: #34 Jake Funk, Running Back.
Jake Funk, remember that name. He might not have the numbers of the sleek running backs that star for schools across MoCo, but he is a classic Damascus styled running back. Running straight ahead and muddied is that style and Rockville got a good look at him all night long on both offense and defense. This Damascus junior ran for 131 yards on 12 carries and produced 3 touchdown runs of 12, 17 and 55 yards, and oh, he intercepted Rockville’s Chuck Reese in the first quarter and Damascus never looked back over their shoulder.

MCM MoCo Sport Football Rankings – October 2014
As high school football approaches the end of October and I look around the county here is what I see as the top ranked teams:
1. Northwest at 7-0, next opponent is Clarksburg (5-2) on 10/24
2. Good Counsel at 7-1, next opponent is Carroll (2-4) on 10/25
3. Damascus at 7-0, next opponent is Seneca Valley (6-1) on 10/24
4. Bullis at 6-1, next opponent is Landon (4-2-1) on 10/24
5. Quince Orchard at 6-1, next opponent is Gaithersburg (2-5) on 10/24
6. Paint Branch at 6-1, next opponent is BCC (0-7) on 10/24
7. Seneca Valley at 6-1, next opponent is Damascus on 10/24
