Friday Is National Walk To Work Day

Montgomery County is encouraging residents who find it feasible, to walk to work this Friday, April 5 to celebrate National Walk To Work Day.

Walk To Work Day is usually on the first Friday of April. It was first created in 2004 by the by then U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson, in hopes that it would get people moving and benefit the environment.

April is also known as National Distracted Driving Month. The county says this would be a good time for drivers and pedestrians to become more aware of potential dangers while commuting.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fact sheet says that those with diabetes who walk for two or more hours a week lower their mortality rate by 39 percent. The report also states, “Walking lengthened the life of people with diabetes regardless of age, sex, race, body mass index, length of time since diagnosis and presence of complications or functional limitations.”

Walking to work may not be convenient for all residents so the county suggests taking public transportation for part of your commute or even walking to your favorite lunch spot.
