Former Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin on Term Limits
The Presidential General Election is days away and Montgomery County voters are going to decide if there should be term limits for the offices of County Executive and County Council. My MCMedia caught up with former County Councilmember Valerie Ervin on why she doesn’t agree with term limits, (see below):
Valerie says it takes 2-3 years to get up to speed. This proposed Charter change allows up to 12 consecutive years for Council and County Executive. That’s plenty of time to be effective. They can even take a break and come back again for another 12 years. All of the surrounding counties in MD have term limits and of the 8 most populous counties in MD , Montgomery is the only one without term limits. Most of those other 8 counties are limited to 2 terms or 8 years, as is the MD Governor. Prince George’s, Baltimore, Howard, Frederick, Anne Arundel, Carroll, Harford and St. Mary’s all have had term limits for many years and no one is trying to repeal them, nor are they trying to repeal term limits for MD Governor, VA Governor (1 term) or US President. The voters, who are the ones that count, are satisfied with term limits there.
