Here are five things to know today, Oct. 19, in Montgomery County, Maryland:
1. Round ‘Em Up: Gaithersburg and Rockville are competing in the Snow Road-eo Challenge. The friendly, team-building competition takes place at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park on from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and provides a fun way for Public Works road crews to prepare for the upcoming winter weather season.
2. BTheOne: County Executive Isiah Leggett and others will launch a public awareness campaign aimed at preventing suicide and drug abuse in adolescents. The BTheOne campaign includes a new website, advertising at bus shelters and movie theaters, and posters and flyers that will be distributed throughout the community.
3. Rockville Community Center: Does the city need a new community center? Attend a meeting tonight to say yea or nay. The meeting will be at Fallsmead at 6:30 p.m.
4. We All Scream: Andrew Gifford, author of “We All Scream: The Fall of the Gifford’s Ice Cream Empire,” describes the toxic family dynamics that destroyed the business and its troubled founders. The session starts at 7 p.m. at the Silver Spring Library.
5. Food Drive: The East County Community Center is collecting non-perishable food items for families in need this holiday season.
