2. Flag Day: The Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the United States flag on June 14, 1777; President Harry Truman signed Flag Day’s permanent observance into law in 1949. We found two Flag Day observances in our area:
- Boy Scout Troop 1750 will hold a Flag Day Retirement Ceremony at the Gaithersburg City Hall Concert Pavilion at 6 p.m.
- Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources hosts Flag Day arts and crafts for families at the Patuxent River State Park Nature Center in Brookeville from 4 to 5 p.m.
3. Hero Dogs recognition: Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot will tour Hero Dogs training center and present a proclamation to Jennifer Lund, the founder of the nonprofit that provides therapy dogs to wounded Maryland veterans and first responders.

4. Elder Abuse Awareness Event: Montgomery County is hosting its 8th annual Senior Safety Fair from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Holiday Park Senior Center in Wheaton to raise awareness about elder abuse.
5. Glen Echo summer concerts: Tonight is the first of 12 free summer concerts on Thursday nights through August 30 in Glen Echo Park.
