Five Things to Know for Dec. 4 in Montgomery County
Here are five things to know for Monday, Dec. 4, in Montgomery County:
1. Government Stuff: Council President Roger Berliner, who gives up the “President” mantle on Tuesday, holds his last meeting with the media at 11:30 a.m. The council’s planning commission discusses regulations on vacant buildings at 2 p.m. Also at 2 p.m, the council’s Education Committee gets an update on the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy and Montgomery College Workforce Development.
2. Boom Goes the Dynamite: If the weather cooperates, the county transportation department will conduct controlled blasts between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. beneath Rockville Pike near the Medical Center Metro Station. A warning siren will sound about 5 minutes and 1 minute before each blast. There are no plans to halt vehicular or pedestrian traffic during the blasts. The blasts are part of the underground crossing project linking Medical Center Metro and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
3. Lawmaker Hearing: The Montgomery County delegation to Annapolis holds a hearing starting at 7 p.m. on local and bi-county bills. The hearing will be in the Third Floor Hearing Room, Council Office Building, Rockville. Here are bills the delegation is considering.
4. County Sports: Damascus Swarmin Hornets wins the state 2A football championship at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis. Quince Orchard High School lost to Wise in the 4A championship game.
5. ICYMI: Police made a fourth arrest in the slayings of Shadi Najjar and Artem Ziberov. The two teens were gunned down the day before graduation in June. Within days of the killing, police had arrested three. The fourth arrest came from processing DNA found at the scene.

Metro Red Line Project: Metro’s Takoma station closes Nov. 25 thru Dec. 10 for major track work. A four-mile section of track will be replaced.
WMATA to close Red Line between Silver Spring and Fort Totten stations 11/25-12/10.
