ESOL Students Share “Stories of Migrating Youth” in Silver Spring (PHOTOS)
In commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, more than 30 ESOL students from Sherwood High School were part of a project called Migrating Lives: Migrating Stories of Our Youth- a community outreach program offered at the Sandy Spring Museum.
On Oct. 7, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and Montgomery County Public Libraries Director Parker Hamilton joined these students to learn about their personal experiences at a special event in Silver Spring.
According to a news release, students learned bookbinding skills, participated in informal art therapy sessions, and created highly personal stories of their own experiences of migration to the United States; from reuniting with family members to starting a new life in the U.S.
The books are now part of an exhibition showcased at the Silver Spring Library.
School Board member Jill Ortman-Fouse shared some of these students’ stories on her Twitter account.
