Montgomery Community Media’s CEO Merlyn Reineke was up on stage next with some remarks about the importance of community media and the growing influence of social media. Then Reineke introduced CNN’s Joe Johns who served as the master of ceremonies for this event.

The first award, the EPIC for Education, went to Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman for his work on the Gaithersburg Book Festival. Ashman was presented the award by author Sarah Pekkanen.

The EPIC for innovation in community media was awarded to Takoma Radio, WOWD-LP 94.3 by Congressman Jamie Raskin.

Pepco’s Debbie Jarvis presented the EPIC For Inspiration to local journalist Barbara Harrison for her work on NBC 4 and Wednesday’s Child.

Timothy Zhou received the EPIC Youth in Media award. This award was presented by MCPS teacher of the year Nancy Shay.

Another entertainment break: GottaSwing had some people dancing in their seats.

The EPIC Monty’s Choice Award went to Laura Rowles for her blog on the MyMCMedia.org website.

MCM Board Chair Jeffrey Slavin presented the EPIC Chairman award to anchor and journalist Jim Vance of NBC 4.  NBC colleague, Tom Sherwood, picked up the award for Vance who was not able to attend the ceremony.

Slavin also presented an EPIC Chairman award to Maureen Bunyan who is the co-founder of the National Association of Black Journalists and former co-anchor of WJLA.

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett presented the EPIC Lifetime Achievement Award to Juan Williams, who is a political analyst for FOX news, an author, and a columnist for The Washington Post.
