EPIC Awards Blog (PHOTOS & VIDEO)
The first annual EPIC (Excellence in Programming and Innovative Content) Awards ceremony took place on the evening of June 8, at The Fillmore in Silver Spring.
These awards recognize the creators of outstanding and innovative multimedia content distributed on broadcast or broadband platforms. The mission of the EPIC Awards is to strengthen our community of multimedia content creators by inspiring, promoting and recognizing excellence and innovation.
The EPIC trophies (see photo, right) are one of a kind. They were designed by Arts on the Block.

EPIC Awards Ceremony Recap
The Epic Awards ceremony began with a special performance by the Adventure Theatre’s Pre- Professional Company performing the Hamilton medley. The crowd loved the performance and Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman was observed singing along (he knew every word it seemed).
Montgomery Community Media’s CEO Merlyn Reineke was up on stage next with some remarks about the importance of community media and the growing influence of social media. Then Reineke introduced CNN’s Joe Johns who served as the master of ceremonies for this event.

The first award, the EPIC for Education, went to Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman for his work on the Gaithersburg Book Festival. Ashman was presented the award by author Sarah Pekkanen.

The EPIC for innovation in community media was awarded to Takoma Radio, WOWD-LP 94.3 by Congressman Jamie Raskin.

MCM Board Chair Jeffrey Slavin presented the EPIC Chairman award to anchor and journalist Jim Vance of NBC 4. NBC colleague, Tom Sherwood, picked up the award for Vance who was not able to attend the ceremony.

The Setting
The Epic Awards ceremony is scheduled for Thursday night at The Fillmore.
There is a VIP reception from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and the doors open for general seating at 6:30 p.m. The dinner, program and awards takes place from 7 -9 :30 p.m.
The dress is Red Carpet Glam.
The Fillmore is located at 8656 Colesville Road in Silver Spring.
EPIC Entertainment
There are two special performances during the EPIC Awards ceremony on Thursday night at The Fillmore.
The Adventure Theatre’s pre-professional company will perform The Hamilton Medley at the top of the event.
There will be a special dance performance by GottaSwing later in the evening.
The Awards
The EPIC awards will be presented in the following categories: EPIC for Education: Teaching and Sharing the Arts, EPIC for Innovation, EPIC for Inspiration, EPIC for Youth Media, EPIC MCM’s Monty Choice Award, MCM Chairman’s Award and the EPIC Lifetime Achievement Award.
CNN’s Joe Johns will serve as the master of ceremonies for the awards ceremony.
Johns is CNN’s senior Washington correspondent and he is responsible for covering a wide range of political and breaking news stories for the network.
