Election Director Confirms Robin Ficker’s Term Limits Petition Has Enough Signatures

A Montgomery County Board of Elections (BOE) official announced on Tuesday that defense attorney and local activist Robin Ficker has collected more than the 10,000 signatures necessary to put term limits on the ballot later this year.

In a letter to Ficker (that is posted on the BOE website), Election Director Margaret Jurgensen wrote, “the petition contained more than the requisite 10,000 signatures necessary to place the question on the 2016 General Election ballot.”

She also noted that, “a person aggrieved by this determination may file a petition for judicial review by the 10th day following the determination.”

You may remember that Ficker turned in his petition earlier this month at County Executive Ike Leggett’s office. At that time, Ficker reported that he had collected 18,000 signatures. In her letter, Jurgensen did not specify the exact number of signatures that were validated.

The ballot question would ask voters in Montgomery County whether the county executive and county council members should be limited to three consecutive terms.

Several local leaders, including Council President Nancy Floreen and Councilmembers Marc Elrich and
George Leventhal, have said they oppose the term limits referendum.

Montgomery County’s Charter Review Commission is scheduled to discuss term limits at an early morning meeting on Wednesday.
