Driver Sought in Assault on a Montgomery County Police Officer

Montgomery County Police is searching for a person of interest in connection with an assault on a off-duty police officer when a driver photo of Montgomery County Police Carattempted to hit the officer with his car, police said.

The assault occurred on April 7 in the shopping district of Chevy Chase.

According to a news release, the officer was in the location working as a security employee for shops in the area, when a security guard from one of the stores noticed a suspicious vehicle. He then notified the police officer who believes the vehicle had improperly displayed tags and was not parked in a legal parking spot.

The car,  a silver Acura parked on South Park Avenue, had only one occupant, police said.

According to police, the officer saw the vehicle drive toward the traffic light at Wisconsin Avenue and stop at the red light to make a left turn onto Wisconsin Avenue. The officer then approached the driver’s window of the vehicle and placed his hand on the roof line. The driver of the vehicle made eye contact with the officer and turned the vehicle wheel toward the officer.

The driver then accelerated and struck the officer. The officer’s hand become stuck on the vehicle and he fell on the roadway as the vehicle sped off, police said.

The officer is 30 years old and has been with the department for the past eight years. He was transported to a local hospital on Tuesday night with non-life threatening injuries. He did hit his head on the street, and suffered contusions to his arms and legs.

Police found the suspect vehicle unoccupied on April 8 in Washington, D.C. by the Metropolitan Police Department.
