Dozens Attend Community Meeting to Discuss Crime in Montgomery Village (VIDEO)
Dozens of residents attended a community meeting with Montgomery County police officers on Wednesday night to discuss crime in Montgomery Village.
Many residents attended the meeting at the North Creek Community Center because they wanted more information about the double homicide that occurred on Gallery Court on June 5th.
Commander Dinesh Patil of the 6th District Police Station told residents that detectives were working overtime to solve the case.
State Senator Nancy King, who represents District 39, was one of the residents at the meeting. King has lived in Montgomery Village for 35 years, and she said it remains a safe place to live.
“I’m hearing from people that they think they need to move out of Montgomery Village because there is so much crime,” King said. “The actual truth is that there is no more crime here than there is anywhere else.”
Kristen Durning has lived in Montgomery Village for 15 years and she was at the meeting to learn more about crime in the neighborhood and she wanted to know what parents should be telling their teenagers about overall safety following the recent murders.
East Village resident Christine Bibb had similar concerns. She was hoping to learn more about the double homicide at the meeting with police. She said she has two boys who are nervous. She thinks police should hold a meeting with local youth so they can get their general questions about safety in the neighborhood answered.
Patil tried to reassure residents.
“It’s highly unlikely that something like that is going to happen again,” Patil said. “As far as I know there wasn’t any association with the neighborhood that caused anything…it happened where it happened.”
According to Patil, the double murder has prompted residents to ask what is going on in the Village with crime in general. He said it is important to understand the story behind the uptick in some crime stats, including robberies, auto thefts and thefts from vehicles.
So is Montgomery Village safe?
“We have work to do,” Patil said. “Yes, it is a safe place but there are certainly pockets of crime and issues that we have to contend with. We have great cops, and detectives and we have good data to work with, and with the community, I think, when you see a room like this fill up, the community cares and they want to be engaged and hopefully we help to empower them to be an active part of making their community safer too.”
