Detectives Charge Man For Sandy Spring Bank Armed Robbery, Thanks to Tipster

Raul G. Castro | MCPD

Detectives from Montgomery County Police’s Major Crimes Division have arrested a man in connection with an armed robbery that occurred in Montgomery Village in June 2017. Police say information from a tipster was essential in leading to this arrest.

Police say Raul G. Castro, 32, of Gaithersburg, was arrested Friday near his home in Olde Town Avenue “on the strength of a Montgomery County arrest warrant charging him with one count of armed robbery.”

Castro is alleged to have entered the Sandy Spring Bank on Stedwick Road in Montgomery Village on June 12, 2017, and approach a teller with a note demanding money. Police say the note implied that Castro had a weapon.

After passing this note, police say Castro received an “undisclosed amount of cash” and then fleed the bank.

Detectives released a surveillance photo showing the man alleged to have been involved in the armed robbery on June 13, 2017. On June 10, 2019, police say investigators received a tip which led to them to believe Castro was the man involved in the incident.

Online court records say Castro has been released after posting a $20,000 bond.
