Detective: Kentlands Graffiti Likely the Work of Silver Spring Street Gang
This graffiti was spray painted on a fence in the Kentlands neighborhood.
The gang responsible for the graffiti found on a fence in Kentlands is likely the Schuyler Road Crew, according to a Montgomery County police detective.
“They are a neighborhood gang or a hybrid group,” said Detective Sgt. C.J. Bullock of the Criminal Street Gang Unit in an email to MyMCMedia.
A neighborhood gang is formed based on residence or hangouts. Bullock said members can be any race or nationality as long as they relate to the neighborhood.
Schuyler Road, in Silver Spring, connects Highland View and Sligo Creek elementary schools.
“[M]ost persons that join a neighborhood gang live in that neighborhood. Montgomery County is very transient. People move, have family or girlfriends in various parts of the County. The person that tagged the fence could have lived in Silver Spring and moved to Gaithersburg …” Bullock wrote.
He said SRC would be different than transnational criminal organizations, such as MS-13, where membership is based on heritage, Bullock wrote.
Would SRC and MS-13 be considered rivals?
“There are areas where both gangs are in close proximity to each other,” Bullock wrote. “They will conflict with each other but I wouldn’t call them a rival. 18th Street Gang is a rival of MS-13.”
The graffiti crosses out “MS” — Bullock said that could be a sign of disrespect.
“It tells those gang members/associates that they don’t care about them or what they represent,” he wrote.
Bullock said he gang unit didn’t have any intelligence on the significance of the stylized “100” that appears in the graffiti, or the words “Revolucion o Muerte.”
