Damascus Names New Athletic Director

Damascus High School has a new athletic director, the school’s principal announced Wednesday.

Clifford Elgin, formerly the assistant athletic director at Clarksburg High School, was chosen to lead the beleaguered program at Damascus.

“Mr. Elgin is extremely excited to bring his experiences to Damascus and work collaboratively with our student-athletes, coaches, parents and guardians, staff members, and the entire Damascus community to move our program forward,” principal Kevin Yates wrote in a message to parents.

The school is still reeling from a scandal last fall when members of the school’s junior varsity football team assaulted teammates with a broomstick. Elgin is replacing Joe Doody, the former athletic director, who was placed on leave on May 7 amid the fallout.

Here is Yates’ full message:

Damascus Community,

It is with great pleasure that I introduce our new athletic director, Mr. Clifford (Cliff) Elgin.  Mr. Elgin is a seasoned coach and athletic administrator, with over 19 years of experience serving student-athletes and athletics across Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).  Most recently, he has served as the assistant athletic director at Clarksburg High School and the sport director for the MCPS golf program.  Mr. Elgin has an extensive background in high school athletics, having coached basketball, golf, and bocce.  He has also represented MCPS at the state level, as the district representative on the state golf committee and assisted with the operations at the state basketball tournament.

Mr. Elgin is extremely excited to bring his experiences to Damascus and work collaboratively with our student-athletes, coaches, parents and guardians, staff members, and the entire Damascus community to move our program forward.

We look forward to welcoming Mr. Elgin to Damascus to oversee our robust athletic program, effective July 1.   Mr. Elgin will be available to meet with parents and students at our incoming 9th grade information meeting for athletics on Tuesday evening, June 4th.  Mr. Elgin will host a meet and greet from 6:30 pm – 7:00 pm, followed by the incoming 9th grade meeting at 7:00 pm.  In the coming weeks, Mr. Elgin will also be meeting with stakeholders across our program to set the stage for a successful transition.  Please join me in welcoming Mr. Elgin to Damascus!
