County Leaders to Celebrate First Day of School at Wheaton Woods Elementary

The first day of school is Aug. 31, and Montgomery County officials want to get off on the right foot.

firstdayofschool2On Monday, at 10:30 a.m., a news conference to talk about strategic priorities for the upcoming year, school improvements, increasing on student enrollment, and Capital Improvement Program (CIP) needs for Montgomery County Public Schools, is scheduled to be held at Wheaton Woods Elementary School in Rockville.

MCPS spokesperson Dana Tofig told MyMCMedia this upcoming winter break students and staff at Wheaton Woods will relocate to North Lake Center in Rockville since Wheaton Woods Elementary School is expected to get a brand new building by August 2017.

The project is part of a $1.53 billion CIP budget that covers fiscal years 2015 to 2020, Tofig said.

The Montgomery County Council approved this CIP budget in May, which it was an increase of about $180 million over the current CIP 2013 to 2018 budget, school official said.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, MCPS Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers, Montgomery County Board of Education President Patricia O’Neill, and other county officials, are expected to be at this news conference.

More than 156,000 students are expected to the first day of school.
