County Installing Dynamic Signs to Show Real-Time Speed on Brink Road in Gaithersburg

Via Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT).

Montgomery County is installing permanent “dynamic speed signs” that tell drivers their real-time speeds on Brink Road in Gaithersburg, according to a release from the county.

The county’s transportation department (MCDOT) will put up four signs: two facing eastbound traffic and two facing westbound. MCDOT assessed Brink Road’s vehicle crash history and found several collisions that were considered speed-related on and surrounding that road, the statement says.

If a driver goes above 40 miles per hour on sections of the road where signs are posted, the signs will light-up and show the vehicle’s speed. This is a pilot program part of the county’s Vision Zero effort which aims to improve road safety and eliminate all serious and fatal collisions in the county by 2030.

Other parts of county roads will also have dynamic signs installed over the next year, according to the county. The program will be evaluated to see if the signs have significant, long-term effects on speed.
