Montgomery County Council President Craig Rice and Councilmembers Nancy Navarro, Roger Berliner, George Leventhal and Phil Andrews reflect on his life and legacy:

Council President Craig Rice: “Nelson Mandela was an icon.  His work will transcend time and likely never be duplicated. He was a crusader for everything that will make our World a better place to live.”

Council Vice President George Leventhal: “There are so many lessons to be learned from Nelson Mandela’s life. Most impressive to me is that he never sought vengeance against those who imprisoned and mistreated him. South Africa’s history would have taken a very different turn if he had not been such a great example of forgiveness and reconciliation. Few individuals in history have had the impact of Nelson Mandela. His memory will live forever.”

Councilmember Nancy Navarro:  “My very first act of political activism as a young woman was fighting to urge my University (University of Missouri- Columbia) to divest from South Africa – they did. Nelson Mandela was my hero, opened my eyes to the fact that a small gesture could make a difference, but only because he had already laid the foundation. Rest in peace, you changed this world- you transformed this world.”

Councilmember Phil Andrews: “No person has done more to advance reconciliation than Nelson Mandela. He was a model for the world.”

Councilmember Roger Berliner: “There are few figures in history who have had as much of a transformative impact on the lives and consciousness of so many as Nelson Mandela.”
