County Cancels Pooch Pool Party

As a precautionary measure – in response to the recent spread of canine influenza (dog flu) in Montgomery County — the Recreation Department has canceled its popular Pooch Pool Party scheduled for September 7 and 8.

“In light of the canine flu that has shown up in Montgomery County, we are canceling the Pooch Pool Party scheduled at the Wheaton – Glenmont Pool,” said Gabe Albornoz, Recreation Department director. “It is disappointing to have to cancel this popular event, but we feel it is the right decision to proactively protect our pets from the potential spread of the virus.”

While County Animal Services Division officials confirm there have been cases of the canine flu in the County they believe that with precautions, such as dog owners limiting dog to dog contact with dogs other than their own, the spread of the virus can be minimized. County officials recommend that dog-owners contact their veterinarians with any concerns or questions.

According to a report issued by the Maryland departments of Agriculture, Health and Mental Hygiene, and Natural Resources, the Canine Influenza was reported in Montgomery County on August 21. Initially, six cases and two fatalities were recorded. A week later, up to 20 cases had been reported in the County.

The Centers for Disease Control and Protection indicates that that this virus is not a threat to humans. The symptoms of this illness in dogs are cough, runny nose and fever.
