Councilmember Leventhal Reacts to Minimum Wage Veto and Says What’s Next (VIDEO)
In the MyMCMedia Extra video, below, Montgomery County Council member George Leventhal shares his reaction to County Executive Ike Leggett’s veto of the minimum wage legislation that would have raised the minimum wage to $15 in 2020.
“I’m sorry that Mr. Leggett has not responded in a way that will address the needs of people who are struggling very hard to get by on poverty wages,” said Leventhal.
As for what happens next, Leventhal said he plans to schedule some Health and Human Services (H & HS) Committee meetings so officials can hear directly from workers about how they cope in Montgomery County where the cost of living is considered high.
Some of the questions he wants to ask the workers, include: “Are they living in overcrowded housing? Are they commuting long distances to get to work? Are they food insecure?”
“These are questions I want to ask directly to workers,” said Leventhal. “We have heard a lot from employers.”
He also wants to know more about the suggested youth exemptions and who benefits and at what expense.
