I would like to recommend that you meet our friend, Hal Garman (ret. pastor) who lives at Asbury Methodist Village (as John and I do). He has worked up a program in connection with Gaithersburg Elementary School called BCI (Beloved Community Initiative). Volunteers from Asbury serve as mentors, homework tutors, conversational adults, etc. The kids come to eat on some Fridays at
Asbury’s dining rooms (with tablecloths, cloth napkins, etc.) Other volunteers give their time to riding the Asbury bus to bring the
kids here for the meals, games, occasionally a swim. Then the bus goes back to the school with them, to be met by their parents, or if parents request the volunteers walk the kids home (especially in darkness). I will speak to him tomorrow and let him know
that I recommend you as someone he may like to discuss how he formed the group. It has been going about 5 years.
