Cemetery Protest Draws More Arrests at HOC Meeting
At least two people were arrested Wednesday at the Housing Opportunities Commission meeting, part of an ongoing protest over the status of graves under an HOC property in Bethesda.
Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin was arrested. Slavin, who is president of Montgomery Community Media’s board of directors, has since been released and was issued a citation for disorderly conduct. At last month’s meeting, four protesters were arrested.
At the monthly HOC meeting, several people including Slavin and the Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition protested against the commission in regards to the sacred Moses African Cemetery that allegedly lies underneath the HOC’s Westward Towers parking lot. Officials claim to believe that hundreds of freed Africans, and perhaps thousands of enslaved Africans, were buried under the parking lot.
The protest consisted of peaceful singing.
