Catherine Hoggle Is Expected Back in Court on Aug. 31 (VIDEO)
The mental competency of Catherine Hoggle is expected to be discussed in a Rockville district courtroom Thursday morning.
It’s been almost three years since the 30-year-old mother was charged with hindering, neglect and obstruction in the case of her missing children, Sarah (6) And Jacob (5).
Since her arrest on the misdemeanor charges, she has been undergoing treatment at a state psychiatric hospital in Jessup where the doctors at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center have said repeatedly that Hoggle is not mentally competent to stand trial.
Defense attorney David Felsen represents Hoggle, and he was asked what happens next after her last court appearance in July.
“There is a possibility that she could be restored to competency, it is a medical determination,” Felsen said. “In the United States, we don’t have trials against people who are incompetent. They need to be able to defend themselves. The doctors have determined for a variety of reasons that Miss Hoggle is not able to stand trial.”
Hoggle is the last known person to have seen Sarah and Jacob before they disappeared from their Clarksburg home in Sept. of 2014, and despite police and community searches the siblings have not been found.
Troy Turner is their father and he wants justice for his kids. Turner said to him justice means bringing them home. Turner said he will be court on Thursday morning, and he hopes the case finally moves forward in the courts.
Lindsey Hoggle is the mother of Catherine, and the grandmother of Sarah and Jacob. She has attended every court hearing for her daughter, and often sits near the front of the courtroom while the police detectives working the case tend to sit in the back of the courtroom. No matter how many times she sits in the courtroom, she says it is never easy to watch her daughter enter and leave the courtroom in handcuffs.
As for the Aug. 31 hearing, Lindsey Hoggle doesn’t know what to expect. She said a friend offered to drive her to and from the court proceedings, and she is grateful for the company and support because she knows it will be an emotional day.
On Facebook, her cover photo includes age progressed photos of Sarah and Jacob with a caption that reads, “never give up hope, and believe they are out there.”
