Cashell Elementary School Named a National Blue Ribbon School
Cashell Elementary School has been selected as a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Sept. 30.
Cashell, which serves the Rockville and Olney areas, was honored for its exceptional academic performance, as well as its leadership, and instructional programs. Cashell is the 37th school in Montgomery County Public Schools to be named a National Blue Ribbon School. The school at 17101 Cashell Road was named a 2014 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools in December, qualifying the school for consideration as a National Blue Ribbon School.
“I am still floating,” Principal Maureen Ahern-Stamoulis told MyMCMedia Tuesday. “You could hear the cheers in the hallway.”
Ahern-Stamoulis told MyMCMedia Tuesday she believes the school earned its distinction because of the work of the teachers and development staff at the school who participated in a MCPS development training called Professional Learning Communities Institute. There team leaders and other staff got a chance to examine case studies of successful schools and then analyze data of individual students on a day-to-day basis to address improvement at Cashell.
Cashell serves more than 320 students from Pre-K through Grade 5, and has four classes serving 3-to-11-year-old students with special needs. Students have scored at high levels on the Maryland School Assessments for the last several years. In 2013, more than 95 percent of the students were proficient in reading, with 52 percent scoring in the advanced range. In mathematics, more than 95 percent of Cashell students were proficient, with 60 percent scoring in the advanced range.
In addition to a robust academic program, Cashell has a strong integrated arts program. The arts team collaborates on several student productions throughout the year, and the Cashell chorus has performed in several Washington, D.C. venues, including the Cherry Blossom Parade.
“Congratulations to the entire Cashell Elementary School community on being named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr. “Cashell is a great example of how a highly engaged staff can work in partnership with parents and community members, leading to great results for our children.”
Ahern-Stamoulis said staff will celebrate today with sparkling cider and plan for a bigger party later. In December, each class had a pizza party to mark their award as a Maryland Blue Ribbon School.
Cashell is one of six public schools in Maryland and 332 schools nationwide that were honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools this year. Cashell and the other 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools are scheduled to be honored at a recognition ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.
