Board of Education Approves $2 Billion Operating Budget for FY 2019
Montgomery County’s Board of Education unanimously approved a more than $2 billion dollar budget for Fiscal Year 2019 Operating Budget during its regular scheduled meeting early Tuesday.
The Board’s approval comes just weeks after the Montgomery County Council approved the Board’s recommended budget —a nearly $77 million increase from the current 2018 FY Operating Budget.
Prior to the budget approval, the School Board held meetings with the public to discuss the approval process, and to hear from the community on their wants and needs.
The increase in the budget reflects that increase in expenditures, according to a memorandum drafted by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jack Smith. MCPS school officials are anticipating an increase in school enrollment during the 2018-2019 school year. Another factor that contributes to the budget increase is school leaders efforts’ to decrease the achievement gap.
