Berliner Delays Vote on Bus Rapid Transit Proposal (VIDEO)
Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner said Monday that he has delayed a vote on bus rapid transit on U.S. 29, waiting for the county’s Department of Transportation to fulfill the council’s desire for public engagement on the project.
“When we took up the BRT master plan … one of the most important issues was in engaging our community so they understood what was at stake with bus rapid transit,” Berliner said.
The council is scheduled to act on the County Executive Ike Leggett’s proposal to move forward with BRT in a couple of weeks, Berliner said.
Berliner said members of the council’s Transportation Committee — Berliner and council members Nancy Floreen and Tom Hucker — concluded the county had not informed the public about certain details, citing travel times as an example.
He said BRT is part of Leggett’s fiscal 2018 spending plan, and the delay would not affect passage of the budget.
