Behind the Greens
Wednesday’s during a golf tournament is the lite day. It is time for all to work out the last kinks before the show begins. For volunteers, it’s their time to rehearse well-known roles or learn new ones.
Volunteers are the heart and soul of running any public event. The Quicken Loans National is no exception. Volunteers come in all age ranges and attired in all manners of bright colors – mostly red.
Those who volunteer at Congressional could come from all over the area’s golf courses and not just necessarily from the host country club. The reward for their day’s effort is a chance to be around the pro’s, maybe even play with the pros. On June 25, 2014 it’s hot and humid as most Washingtonians know and understand the conditions. Yet it is a good time as long as the sky is blue and Topper Shutt’s forecast for rain is delayed beyond the round of play.
I haven’t wandered inside the Clubhouse to see how the members hold up through this event. Rather I spend my time walking the course and looking behind the scenes – mostly from behind the greens.
