Before Being Struck by SUV, Boy Ran to Familiar Faces
A 3-year-old boy died after being hit by an SUV on Tuesday afternoon. The child has been identified as Antonio Martinez Cruz of Rockville.
“Fire and rescue were working to extricate the child from underneath the vehicle… the child was transported to the hospital and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries there,” said Capt. Tom Jordan with the Montgomery County Police Department.
Police say the tragic incident happened in the Sandy Spring Bank parking lot on the 600 block of Rockville Pike, when the young boy got away from his mother and attempted to run toward familiar faces.
“It’s our understanding that the child was with his mother…possibly saw some people he knew across the area which would have made him go into the travel portion of the parking lot…he darted into the travel portion of the parking lot, and was struck by the vehicle,” Capt. Jordan said.
According to a Montgomery County police statement, the driver – 44-year-old Pedro Zavala Leal – stayed on the scene and waited for authorities to arrive.
“They’re going to look at everything involving the circumstances surrounding it. … They’re going to make their determination once they’ve done their investigation to determine whether or not charges should be levied, and they will consult with the State’s Attorney’s Office on that,” Capt. Jordan said.
Police are asking that If anyone witnessed the collision or has additional information regarding this incident, to please contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
