Many patients come to our office after seeing different health care providers, and the most confusion seems to come from the Chiropractic profession unfortunately. Some Doctors of Chiropractic believe that a chiropractic adjustment is the “cure-all” for any condition or ailment, and that is all he or she will do. Others incorporate physical therapy, physiotherapy modalities, massage therapy and rehabilitation into their regimen of care. Different practitioners have different philosophies, and one is not necessarily right or wrong, but there are a few things you should consider before going to see one. Before seeking treatment, you should know what approach your chiropractor takes with new patients. Be cautious about seeing a Doctor of Chiropractic who does the following:

  • Unnecessary or repeat x-ray studies without a good reason
  • Months of endless care without re-examination
  • No improvement or more discomfort that does not result in re-examination or referral elsewhere
  • Pre-sold treatment “packages”
  • Pressure to sign up for or attend maintenance or preventive care programs.

Referrals from family and friends are a good start when looking for any health care provider, but there are plenty of free sites on the internet where you can find good information about a potential doctor. You can also check with your state’s medical board to see if your doctor has had any negative reports, suits, or complaints filed against him or her. Some good places to get some general information are:

www.HealthGrades.com
www.Wellness.com
www.Vitals.com
www.AngiesList.com

www.Yelp.com

Most importantly, your new chiropractor should be willing to refer you to another health care provider if chiropractic treatment is not producing positive results in a timely fashion. The best doctors are the ones who give you as much information as possible to make an informed decision about your treatment as well as any alternatives.
